Our Review of the 3 Best Mattress Toppers for Back Pain in New Zealand (January 2024)

Best Overall — Editor’s Choice —  Emma Mattress Topper

Emma Mattress Topper

Highlights

  • The pressure-relieving Airgocell foam is soft and conforming, increasing the comfort of a mattress;
  • This topper’s HRX foam is ideal for a more supportive feel, cradling the spine;
  • The cover is removable in just a few seconds, allowing the cover to be washed.

The Emma Mattress Topper is my editor’s choice due to its firmness, bounce, and motion isolation.

The Emma Mattress Topper has a firmer side that uses HRX foam, which works excellently as a firm sleeping space. From my tests, I felt the firm side had a rating of 7. I could lie on the firm side and feel pleasant relief as my muscles' tension faded.

The Emma Mattress Topper is firmer by 1 point than the Emma Diamond. I recommend the Emma Mattress Topper to sleepers who want a sleeping surface as firm as possible from their topper.

A high bounce rate may help you move around on the topper quickly and easily. In light of my tests with the Emma Mattress Topper, I recorded a bounce of 7.8 inches. I could shift positions quickly when lying on this topper.

The Emma Mattress Topper had a 1-inch higher bounce than the Emma Diamond Topper. I would recommend the Emma Topper to sleepers who prefer as much bounce and ease of mobility as possible.

Another helpful feature of a topper that may help with back pain is how well it can absorb motion. In my tests, the Emma Mattress Topper’s soft side had only 2.5 inches between my hand compressions and my glass of water. I could sleep and not notice whenever my partner changed to a new position.

The Emma Mattress Topper’s soft side had 0.5 inches better motion absorption than both the Peace Lily Topper and the Emma Diamond Topper. I would recommend the Emma Mattress Topper to couples who share a bed with a restless partner.

Based on Our Review

According to my tests, the HRX foam of the Emma Mattress Topper was smooth and conforming, and it kept my spine straight. This allowed my tension to disperse, making me feel more comfortable and tension-free. I was more comfortable on my back when using the firmer side of the topper.

Best for Hot Sleepers — Emma Diamond Mattress Topper

Emma Diamond Mattress Topper

Highlights

  • The innovative graphite foam layer helps to draw away any heat build-up, helping hot sleepers feel cool;
  • The thick HRX foam layer helps to cushion and ease pressure points, helping sleepers feel soothed at night;
  • The 3-inch thickness is responsive for sleepers who don’t want to feel stuck in their topper.

The Emma Diamond Mattress Topper is my best topper for hot sleepers due to its graphite foam and coolness, response, and edge support. When I was testing this topper, I measured a temperature of 30.7 degrees Celsius, cooling the surface by a factor of 0.5 degrees. I could feel the graphite underneath me, keeping my temperature neutral.

Comparing the Emma Diamond to the Emma Flip Topper, the Emma Flip was slightly cooler due to its thinner material and Airgocell foam. There was a temperature difference of 1.5 degrees between the two. I would recommend the Emma Mattress Topper to sleepers who find they overheat at night.

Response is essential for thicker toppers like the Emma Diamond to ensure you can still move around on the top safely. Through my tests, I noted a response of 0.3 seconds for the topper to completely return to its shape. It was easy for me to move around along the top, even if it was thick and cushioning.

The Emma Diamond had the same response time as the Peace Lily, responding in a similar manner as latex. However, a plus point for the Emma Diamond is its quicker speed than the Emma Flip. It was 0.1 seconds faster, which is slight but can make a difference for those sensitive to feeling ‘stuck.’ I would recommend the Diamond Topper to sleepers who enjoy thickness as well as quick response.

I also enjoyed the edge support the Emma Diamond had. In my tests, I noted the topper firmed up the edges of my mattress by a whole 0.4 inches. I felt more stable while getting in and out of bed.

The Emma Diamond outperformed the Peace Lily regarding edge support by 0.3 inches. I would recommend the Emma DIamond for sleepers who want less of a dip along the edges of their mattress and topper.

Based on Our Review

When reviewing the Emma Diamond Topper, I found its thickness played a huge role in its comfort. The graphite helped to keep heat away, while the HRX foam redistributed my weight. It also helped to even out my spine, and I was comfortable.

Best Latex Option — Peace Lily Mattress Topper

Peace Lily Mattress Topper

Highlights

  • The topper is responsive and soft, making for a comfortable lie-on;
  • Non-toxic and organic materials are safer for those who are sensitive to chemicals;
  • The latex doesn’t retain heat, helping sleepers stay cool.

The Peace Lily Topper is my best latex option due to its coolness, fair sinkage, and bounciness.

Latex is well-known for its excellent heat dispersal, which I confirmed when testing this topper. In my tests, I noted a temperature of 28.1 degrees Celsius. I was cool and comfortable, even if the night was hot.

The Peace Lily was slightly cooler than the Emma Diamond by 2.6 degrees. I would recommend the Peace Lily for sleepers who struggle with heat issues at night.

A good mattress topper for back pain needs to have enough sinkage for support and pressure relief. I found the Peace Lily topper had adequate sinkage that didn’t sink in too much. It was just enough to provide a supportive resting place. I calculated a sinkage of 2.25 inches in my tests.

The Peace Lily Topper had 0.15 inches less sinkage than the Emma Diamond Topper, making it slightly firmer. I would recommend the Peace Lily Topper to sleepers who want slightly less sinkage and a firm base for their spine.

Another feature that stuck out to me was the bounce of the Peace Lily Topper. From my tests, I recorded a bounce of 8.5 inches. I could easily transfer my weight and change positions. It was 1.7 inches higher than the Emma Diamond. I would recommend the Peace Lily Topper to sleepers who struggle with moving in bed and need a little extra help.

Based on Our Review

While testing the Peace Lily Topper, I found it to be exceptionally pressure-relieving. I tend to sleep hot, too, so the latex was really great at stopping heat from bothering me. The latex was not as conforming as what I’m used too, but I found there was enough support for my spine regardless.

Why You Should Trust Me

I have many years of experience studying mattress toppers and analyzing the sleep industry. I can identify which mattress toppers are best for each type of sleeper. My tests on mattresses and mattress toppers include checking for comfort, firmness, and coolness. Comfort and firmness are essential for mattress toppers that may help with back pain because a firmer topper leads to a likelier chance of the spine and hips being lifted and aligned.

The best mattress toppers in New Zealand scored high in comfort, firmness, and coolness. This is why I considered them for this list, and included them in as recommendations. You can learn more about how I test mattress toppers here.

Additional factors to look at

Here are some additional factors to look at for choosing the best mattress toppers for back pain in New Zealand.

  • Thickness
  • Density
  • Price

Thickness

The thickness of a topper plays a crucial role in how well it will support your spine and back when it comes to mattress toppers. When looking at how thick a mattress topper should be, I recommend looking for a topper with a thickness of at least 2-3 inches. This is thick enough that the material will catch your weight instead of letting you sink through it.

Density

Density is another feature that you will want to look at regarding your chosen topper. Materials have different densities and behave differently. For example, you may have a topper that is only 2 inches thick, but if it has a high density, it will catch your weight more easily and not let you fall through, supporting you adequately.

However, even if you have a 3-inch thick topper that has a very light density, you will fall through it like air and hit your mattress underneath, which defeats the purpose of having a topper in the first place.

According to a study by Science Direct, a hard topper with high density has been linked to higher body pressure and a reduced temperature. This may help a person get more restful sleep (1).

Density also has to balance bounce, as a bouncy and responsive topper can help improve sleep quality. According to a study by Research Gate, a bouncy topper can help reduce core temperatures and improve sleep (2).

Price

Price is another critical factor to consider when it comes to choosing a mattress topper. You want to look for a topper that’s in the $200-$500 range, which usually offers good value for the price. Anything $600 and up is considered a luxury topper.

F.A.Q.

What thickness of mattress topper is best for back pain?

The best thickness of a topper for back pain is around 2-3 inches. This allows there to be enough material to support you without falling through it.

Do I need a harder or softer mattress topper if my back hurts?

You will typically need a harder topper. However, soft ones may work as well. The key is to look for a topper that is going to support you. Harder toppers have an easier time doing this.

Conclusion

Finding the best mattress toppers for back pain in New Zealand doesn’t have to take hours. By knowing the right thickness to look for and the price range, you can be on the way to choosing a comfortable sleep for nights to come.

In my opinion, the best mattress topper for back pain is the Emma Mattress Topper. I found it to be firm and supportive, and helped to ease any tension in my back. The Emma Topper best suits couples who want as little motion disturbing them as possible.
