Our Review of the 4 Best Mattress Toppers for Back Pain in Australia (March 2024)

Editor’s Choice — Emma Flip Mattress Topper

Emma Flip Mattress Topper

  • The Airgocell foam is soft and cushioning, helping sleepers with pressure relief.
  • Easy-to-remove cover that can be taken off in a matter of seconds for a quick pop in the washing machine.
  • The HRX foam used is firm and stabilizing, assisting with keeping the spine straight.

The Emma Flip Topper is my editor’s choice due to its excellent price, firmness, and coolness.

Price is essential when considering a new topper for your bed. The reason I regard the Emma Flip so highly is because it offers a comfortable solution at a fair price. The Emma Flip Topper is $429 cheaper than the Emma Diamond Topper and $220 cheaper than the Peace Lily Topper. I would recommend the Emma Flip to any sleeper who wants comfort and support at an affordable price.

The Emma Flip has an excellent feature where one side is softer than the other, allowing sleepers more flexibility and comfort in their sleep. From my tests, its Airgocell foam felt around a 6.5, while its HRX foam side felt around a 7 on the firmness scale. I experienced more spinal support on the firmer side, and my hips were lifted.

The Emma Flip had better firmness than the Emma Diamond by at least 0.5 points. I would recommend the Emma Flip Topper to sleepers who prefer more spinal support at night.

Staying cool is another feature that's essential for a mattress topper. The Emma Flip is an excellent solution for keeping night sweats at bay. From my tests, the Emma Flip had a temperature of 29.2 degrees Celsius. I could lie on the topper and not have any pesky overheating happening during the night.

This topper was cooler than the Emma Diamond by 1.5 degrees. This makes the Emma Flip slightly better in regards to cooling. I would recommend the Emma Flip to sleepers who tend to sleep hot.

“The Emma Flip does well at keeping me cool and comfortable. I noticed the memory foam didn’t trap heat, and the cover is breathable, helping to reduce night sweats,” stated Connie Hack of The Sleep Advisors.

Based on Our Review

According to my tests, the Emma Flip did excellent at providing support for my spine. The Airgocell foam was cradling and helped to redistribute my weight and add an extra layer to my mattress. I felt comfortable on my back with the mix of Airgocell and HRX foam.

Best for Hot Sleepers — Emma Diamond Mattress Topper

Emma Diamond Mattress Topper

  • The graphite foam helps to draw away heat and moisture, keeping sleepers dry and comfortable at night.
  • The comfort foam layer is thick and cushioning, giving sleepers gentle cradling of sore joints.
  • The edges of the topper firm up a mattress, giving more stability to getting in and out of bed.

The Emma Diamond is my best topper for sleepers because it includes graphite, good edge support, and motion isolation.

Graphite is known for its cooling and moisture-wicking properties. The Emma Diamond Topper takes advantage of this with its first layer made of graphite, which enhances its cooling ability. In light of my tests, I noticed a temperature of 30.7 degrees Celsius. I was nice and dry while testing it, and my temperature was pleasantly neutral.

However, graphite can’t quite hold up its own against latex. The Peace Lily Topper performed slightly better in regards to coolness by 2.6 degrees. I would recommend the Peace Lily to sleepers who want as much heat-wicking power as possible.

Another plus point for the Emma Diamond Topper is its ability to firm up an edge. This is essential for sleepers who struggle to get out of bed on soft edges. In light of my tests, the Emma Diamond Topper firmed up my mattress’s edges by 0.4 inches. I was raised slightly while sitting on the edge and experienced better stability.

This is better than the Peace Lily Topper, which only firmed up my mattress by 0.1 inch. This is a difference of 0.3, and I would recommend the Emma Diamond Topper to sleepers who want more support along the edge.

Motion isolation is another good point to note regarding the Emma Diamond Topper. This feature allows two sleepers to sleep beside each other without disturbing the other person. During my tests, I had a glass of water on the topper and pressed my hands along the top, watching if the glass moved. The topper absorbed motion until I reached about the 3-inch distance between my hands and the glass. This is fairly good motion isolation, and I could toss and turn without my partner noticing.

This topper slightly outperformed the Emma Flip on its firm side by 0.5 inches. I would recommend the Emma Diamond to sleepers who prefer fewer distractions from partners at night.

Based on Our Review

Through my tests, I found the Emma Diamond Topper incredibly cushy. It offered extra sinkage that generously cradled my limbs, and I was comfortable as I lay on my back and side. The foam was also fast-acting, so I didn't have issues moving to a new position.

Best Latex Option — Peace Lily Mattress Topper

Peace Lily Mattress Topper

  • Non-toxic latex and cotton create a safer sleeping environment for those sensitive to chemicals.
  • The latex is soft and malleable, providing excellent pressure relief.
  • The latex is also spongy and responsive, adapting quickly to pressure changes to keep you buoyant and free.

The Peace Lily Topper is my best latex option, as it is soft and provides excellent sinkage. It is also bouncy and cool.

Softness is an excellent trait for a mattress topper, as this helps ease joints, aches, and tension. The Peace Lily Topper fairs excellently in this regard due to its generous sinkage. When testing, I measured a sinkage of 2.25 inches. I could lay on my side and have my protruding points cushioned nicely, reducing muscle tension.

The Peace Lily Topper was softer than the Emma Flip Topper’s firm side by 0.15 inches. I would recommend the Peace Lily Topper to sleepers who want a more cushioning and cradling sleeping surface.

There is no struggle to move when it comes to the Peace Lily Topper. The latex it uses is naturally inherently bouncy, ensuring a sleeper has complete freedom of movement. From my tests, I recorded a bounce of 8.5 inches. I could roll across the topper's surface without delay or issue.

The Peace Lily’s latex performs excellently in bounce compared to the other toppers. The Peace Lily was 0.7 inches bouncier than the Emma Flip and 1.7 inches bouncier than the Emma Diamond. I would recommend the Peace Lily Topper to anyone who needs ease of movement and buoyancy while in bed.

Another bonus feature that sleepers will enjoy with the Peace Lily Topper is its coolness. Latex is naturally cool and doesn’t hold on to heat, steadily releasing heat build-up at night. While testing, I noted a temperature of 28.1 degrees Celsius. This was cool enough that I was comfortable and cool throughout the night, even in summer weather.

The Peace Lily was cooler than the Emma Flip by 1.1 degrees. I would recommend the Peace Lily Topper for exceptional hot sleepers who need relief.

“The Peace Lily Topper provides luxury comfort as it is made of high-quality and sustainable materials,” explained Janet Guan of Better Homes & Gardens.

Based on Our Review

When testing the Peace Lily Topper, I noticed the responsive feel of the latex first. It didn’t conform as closely as memory foam typically does, but it's sponginess captured my weight and re-distributed it nicely. I was comfortable in all sleeping positions with this topper.

Best Affordable Option — Origin Contour Mattress Topper

Origin Contour Mattress Topper

  • Its dense memory foam allows for proper spinal alignment for sleepers focused on their backs.
  • It has a competitive price that allows sleepers with tight budgets an option to choose a topper for their home.
  • The foam has a slower spring-back motion, allowing for better contouring and pressure relief.

The Origin Contour is my best affordable option due to its dense memory foam, slow response, and excellent price.

Dense foam can be seen in how much sinkage a topper has. The less sinkage, the more cushioning material there is holding up weight. From my tests, I measured a sinkage of 1.9 inches. I was held in balancing, cushioning foam layers that ensured my spine was straight.

Sinkage of the Origin Contour Mattress Topper

The Origin Contour had 0.5 inches less sinkage than the Emma Diamond, making it ideal as a firm surface. I would suggest the Origin Contour Topper to any sleeper who wants a topper that may help with back pain.

Not only is this topper great for keeping the spine straight, but it also has a slow-adaptive response. This means the foam’s density allows for spine neutrality and deeper contouring. In light of my tests, I noted a bounce-back speed of 0.5 seconds. This is slow enough that I felt the slightest delay that allowed for a more contouring feel.

This topper reacted slower than the Peace Lily Topper by about 0.2 seconds. If you seek more of a cradling feel, I would go for the Origin Contour Topper.

The Origin Contour Mattress Topper also comes at an affordable price for sleepers seeking a topper that may help with back pain. It is $599 less expensive than the Emma Diamond Topper and $350 less expensive than the Peace Lily Topper. The Origin Contour is cheaper and it has a longer response time than the Peace Lily, and firmer sinkage than the Emma Diamond.

Based on Our Review

Through my review of the Origin Contour Mattress Topper, I found it to be an excellent option for spinal support. It uses thick and dense memory foam, which kept my hips lifted and my spine neutral. I was most comfortable while sleeping on my back and stomach.

Why You Should Trust Me

I’ve spent many years in the sleeping and bedding industry, and my repertoire includes countless tests on sleep products like mattresses, pillows, and mattress toppers. The sleep industry constantly evolves and requires a keen eye to deduce the changes and what products work best for each type of sleeper.

When I test products, I test for comfort, pressure relief, and coolness. I also test for edge support and overall bounce. When choosing the best mattress topper for back pain in Australia, a high level of comfort mixed with support and coolness plays a vital role. All of the toppers I’ve chosen score high in these categories and are what I believe to be excellent solutions.

Additional factors to look at

There are a few additional factors that are key to consider before choosing a topper, which include:

  • Thickness
  • Materials
  • Warranty and Sleep Trial
  • Price

When considering how thick your topper should be, you will want to look at a thickness that is thick enough to support and hold the weight of your body. This typically looks like at least 2-3 inches of material. Some toppers are thicker by up to 5 inches, but you should be fine with 2-3.

If you choose to go with a topper that has less than 2 inches of material, you run the risk of falling completely through the material before it has the chance to support you. This can lead to an unsupportive bed and the development of tension.

Materials play an essential role in how a topper feels and behaves. Some are better than others in terms of comfort and pressure relief. Typically, memory foam is a good option to go with for its overall soft and cradling approach. Research says memory foam toppers are the most popular out of all materials by almost 50% (1). However, that doesn’t mean it’s the only material type you should consider.

According to Data Bridge Market Research, eco-friendly materials like the ones found in the Peace Lily Topper are some of the main reasons that there’s an increase in the popularity of mattress toppers (2). Latex is also increasing in popularity, putting it up there next to memory foam in terms of comfort. Latex is also cool and doesn’t hold on to heat, making it one of the best cooling mattress topper materials.

Warranty and Sleep Trial

Warranties are essential for peace of mind over a significant investment like a mattress topper. They help cover you for any manufacturing faults like a broken zipper or tears in the material. Good toppers have a fair warranty period that sleepers can call upon if they encounter any difficulty. For example, the Peace Lily Topper comes with a 10-Year Warranty.

Sleep trials are some of the best solutions in the industry for sleepers who are on the fence about their topper. A sleep trial allows you to try out a topper without any fuss or worry; if it’s not what you like, you can return it within the trial period for a full refund. Toppers like the Emma Flip come with a 100-night sleep trial to let you try it out risk-free.

Price is also a crucial factor to consider, especially for sleepers on a tight budget. You want to ensure you’re getting the best value for your money. I’ve chosen each of these toppers based on their fair and excellent price.

A mattress topper should be around 2-3 inches thick so there’s enough material to absorb and hold your weight in a cushioning and comfortable manner.
