Our Review of the 4 Best Hybrid Mattresses in Australia (January 2024)

Overall Best - Editor’s Choice — The Origin Hybrid Mattress

The Origin Hybrid Mattress

Highlights

  • The Hexagrid layer is soft yet firm, helping to balance and cushion your weight;
  • The Antigravity Springs help keep your hips aloft, improving spinal alignment;
  • This mattress is well-priced, being much lower than the average price of a hybrid mattress at $949.

The Origin Hybrid Mattress is my editor's choice due to its balanced firmness, excellent motion isolation and edge support.

Hybrid mattresses are known for their excellent mix of firmness and comfort, and the Origin Hybrid is no exception. In light of my tests, I measured a sinkage of 1.45 inches. I sank in enough to feel the space of my lumbar filled while keeping me free to shift sleeping positions as I pleased.

The Origin Hybrid had superior sinkage compared to the Valmori Spring Mattress by 0.5 inches. I would recommend the Origin Hybrid to sleepers who want more of a balanced hug in their mattress.

Couples will find an added bonus with the Origin Hybrid. When testing this mattress, I set a glass of water and measured how much it moved from compressions. It absorbed all motion up to 2.5 inches between the water and compressions. I could get into bed without disturbing my partner.

The Origin Hybrid had better motion isolation compared to the Newentor Hybrid and the Valmori by 2.5 inches. I would recommend the Origin Hybrid to sleepers who share the bed with a restless partner.

Another benefit the Origin Hybrid offers is its excellent edge support. From my tests, I measured a sinkage at the edge of 2.9 inches. I could lie at the edge with minimal sinkage, ensuring I was well-supported.

The Origin Hybrid outperformed the Newentor by 0.9 inches. I would recommend the Origin Hybrid for sleepers who want more stability at the edges.

Best for Hot Sleepers — Valmori Spring Mattress

Valmori Spring Mattress

Highlights

  • The gel infused memory foam is soft, helping to cushion sore points;
  • The inclusion of coils make this a springy and supportive sleep surface;
  • The mix of foam and coils create a breathable mattress that helps keep sleepers cool.

The Valmori Spring Mattress is my best option for hot sleepers due to its coolness, firmness, and quick recovery.

Coolness is critical for a good night's sleep. In light of my tests, I noted a temperature of 29.6 degrees Celsius. I was cool enough on the Valmori where my temperature remained neutral and I didn't experience any night sweats.

The Valmori excels in this category compared to the Newentor Hybrid by 1 degree. I would recommend the Valmori to sleepers who find the nights hot.

Firmness also plays a role in a hybrid's effectiveness for sleep. From my tests, the Valmori Spring Mattress sank about 0.95 inches. This is soft enough that I could feel the foam cradle me, yet firm enough to keep my hips aloft.

The Valmori had excellent firmness compared to the Newentor Hybrid by 0.95 inches. I would recommend the Valmori to sleepers who prefer a more robust sleep surface.

The Valmori Spring Mattress's use of springs and responsive foams also helped it have a quick recovery speed. When I was testing this mattress, I noticed a recovery speed of about 0.3 seconds from compressions. I could get in and out of bed without fighting the layers or feeling stuck.

The Valmori moves faster than the Lazycat Spring Mattress by 0.5 seconds. I would recommend the Valmori to sleepers who are interested in a modern memory foam feel.

Based on Our Review

From testing the Valmori Spring Mattress, I found this model to be an excellent solution for support. It's very firm, balancing sinkage so I experienced a straight, neutral spine. I was also comfortable and relieved of pressure, despite feeling less sinkage.

  • The carbon fibre cover is cool and helps disperse heat, keeping sleepers’ temperature neutral;
  • The springs in the Newentor are zoned, targeting different areas of the body for ergonomic sleep;
  • The foam in the Newentor is slow adaptive, cushioning a sleepers body and releasing tension.

The Newentor Hybrid is my best luxury option due to its cushiony sinkage, high bounce, and luxuriously slow recovery.

The Newentor Hybrid mixes soft, cushiony cradling with ergonomic comfort that is ideal for sleepers who prefer some sinkage. Through my tests, I measured a sinkage of 1.9 inches on the Newentor Hybrid. I could sink in nicely without feeling any strain on my back, with evenly balanced weight.

The Newentor had more sinkage than the Valmori Spring Mattress by 0.95 inches. I would recommend the Newentor for sleepers who prefer their mattresses to hug them.

The Newentor Hybrid is one of the few mattresses that successfully pulls off cradling sinkage and support. Its springs create a high bounce that sleepers preferring ease of movement will enjoy. In my tests, I measured a bounce of 10.8 inches. This allowed me to feel a springiness every time I switched positions.

The Newentor had more bounce than the Origin Hybrid by 2.89 inches. I would recommend the Newentor to sleepers who prefer ease when moving in bed.

When testing the Newentor Hybrid, I was very impressed with its slow-conforming memory foam. I could lay comfortably on my side and experience enough sinkage to cradle my hips and shoulders. The foam adapted quickly enough where I was cradled, but never felt ‘stuck’.

Best Budget Hybrid Mattress — Lazycat Spring Mattress

Origin Hybrid Mattress

Highlights

  • The use of springs and a breathable cover make this mattress cool for hot sleepers;
  • The inclusion of latex makes this mattress springy, giving sleepers a feeling of buoyancy;
  • This model is well-priced for sleepers who have tight budgets, allowing hybrid mattresses to be more accessible.

The Lazycat Spring Mattress is my best budget mattress due to its price, sinkage, and balanced recovery.

The Lazycat has some of the best value to offer sleepers as it is excellently priced. It is $29 cheaper than the Origin Hybrid, and $345.60 cheaper than the market average of $949. Despite the price difference, the Lazycat has comparable sinkage and response to qualify its price.

Sinkage for a good price is something the Lazycat spring Mattress does well. From my tests, the Lazycat had a sinkage of 1.7 inches. I felt excellent cradling within the layers of the mattress, and was tension-free.

The Lazycat had 0.25 inches more sinkage than the Origin Hybrid, making its value slightly better for less of a price. I would recommend the Lazycat to sleepers who want more of a hugging feeling from their mattress.

Why You Should Trust Me

I’ve spent years collecting and testing mattresses, learning what makes a mattress the most comfortable. I’ve also watched the mattress market carefully for new, emerging technologies. I test each mattress thoroughly for factors such as pressure relief, bounce, and firmness.

The best hybrid mattresses typically have high scores in pressure relief, bounce, and firmness, which enhance their overall comfort. I’ve used these factors to determine the best hybrid mattresses to include in my list. You can see how I test mattresses and my methodology here.

Additional factors to look at

There are a few additional factors that one should be aware of before choosing a hybrid mattress, which include:

  • Firmness
  • Sinkage and comfort
  • Price

Firmness

Firmness is a key indicator of quality when it comes to hybrid mattresses. The best hybrid mattresses utilise a high amount of firmness to ensure optimal spinal alignment and lift. When the spine is aligned, this leads to muscle tension being released and more of a feeling of comfort.

Firmness comes in the form of minimal sinkage and bounce. Hybrid mattresses that have less sinkage are typically firmer in feel as there is less body-hugging and chance for the body to fall down into misalignment. Bounce is also crucial as the more bouncy a mattress is, the more it indicates that the mattress uses sturdy coils. Sturdy coils are better adept at holding up the body and providing spinal alignment.

Of course, you don’t want a mattress that is too firm. According to research, the ideal firmness of a mattress is medium-firm (1). This allows for some sinkage while ensuring the hips, lumbar and spine are aligned.This also means some of the best firm mattresses allow for some comfort while keeping the spine straight.

Sinkage and Comfort

The sinkage of a hybrid mattress plays a vital role in how comfortable it is. Some mattresses, like the Lazycat, offer deep sinkage that allow for deep-penetrating pressure relief and more of a hugging feel. The body is more wrapped, which means more of the pressure is redistributed for a more comfortable feel.

This is good news for side sleepers as they require more sinkage and softness. The best mattresses for side sleepers allow the hips and shoulders to sink in a bit more to evenly redistribute weight.

Not only that, but hybrid mattresses in Australia have been shown to be more comfortable than other mattresses. Studies show that there is an increase in REM and sleep duration, as well as an overall feeling of comfort and coolness with the mattress (2).

Price

The price of a hybrid mattress can heavily affect its popularity and quality. Typically, you want to look for well-rounded prices that indicate the manufacturer is going for a mix of quality and affordability. Most high-quality mattresses can be found in the $500-$700 range, with a few of the best luxury mattresses reaching over $700.

F.A.Q.

What happens if you put a hybrid mattress on a box spring?

Because a box spring doesn’t have a solid base, it doesn’t provide the right support for a hybrid mattress.

What bed base is best for a hybrid mattress?

The best bed base for a hybrid mattress is a solid base or the use of narrow slats. These give the foam and springs within a hybrid mattress enough support.

Conclusion

Looking for the best hybrid mattress in Australia doesn’t have to be a time-consuming task. As long as you know what makes a hybrid mattress work, like its sinkage and comfort, you’ll be able to choose the right one for your home.

In my opinion, the best hybrid mattress in Australia is the Origin Hybrid. I enjoyed its excellent mix of firmness and sinkage, and it felt incredibly comfortable on my hips and spine. Couples who share the bed with a restless partner will enjoy the Origin Hybrid the most as the Origin absorbs most motion well.
