Best Cooling Mattress Toppers in Australia (November 2023)

Editor’s Choice - Best Overall - Emma Diamond Topper

Emma diamond topper

Highlights

  • Sleeps very cool thanks to the graphite-infused foam layer on top;
  • The lower HRX foam layer adds support to the topper;
  • Emma’s Diamond Degree® technology helps regulate the air and improve deep sleep.

The Emma Diamond Topper is the first top-rated cooling mattress topper on this list, and the reason behind that lies in its ability to take heat away from the body directly and release it. They have their own technology which uses graphite-infused foams to cool it down. Graphite is highly heat-absorbing and acts better than most other materials when it comes to cooling, such as material that other mattress toppers on this list are made of.

This mattress topper has a breathable cover that can be washed to keep fresh for a long time. When I tested this topper, I didn’t feel any pressure in any position, and it felt medium-firm. The relieving firmness level is thanks to the HRX (High Resiliency Extra) foam that provides support from the bottom layer. Overall, it’s an amazing mattress topper for sleeping cool and comfy on warm nights.

Based on Our Review

I reviewed this mattress topper on a firm and non-breathable mattress, so I appreciate how it transformed my sleep experience by relieving the tension in my joints and keeping me chill.

Best Cooling Mattress Topper for Combination Sleepers - Emma Flip Topper

Emma Flip Mattress Topper

Highlights

  • Breathable Airgocell® foam that keeps the body cool;
  • Equipped with High Resiliency Extra foam layer that makes the body feel like it’s in zero-gravity
  • The cover is removable and washable so it can stay fresh

The second product from Emma is definitely one of the best cooling mattress toppers in Australia since it can adapt to different bodies, as well as keep them cool. The foam used in this mattress topper is Airgocell®, which performs better than gel-infused foam like in the Ecosa Mattress Topper. I measured its bounce rate just under the Peace Lily mattress, with a difference of 0.7 inches. That means the memory foam in the Emma Flip can perform similarly to the natural buoyancy of latex and help you feel unrestricted. The Emma Flip also sleeps relatively cool. I measured a difference of 1.1 degrees between the Emma Flip and the Peace Lily topper. The Emma Flip was slightly hotter, but not by much. I remained cool and comfortable and could enjoy the body-cradling feel of memory foam without discomfort.

While testing, I also used the flip feature to turn it around and try the different firmness levels on each of its sides. One of the sides is firm and the other is soft, so stomach sleepers, side sleepers, back sleepers, and combination sleepers can get the most out of it.

I like how the HRX ZeroGravity foam on the firm side keeps the body in zero-gravity mode. I could feel much less pressure on my hips and my joints.

Based on Our Review

While reviewing, I noticed that this topper doesn’t feel hot in the main pressure points, like the hips when sleeping on the sides or the stomach. When sleeping on the back, I felt much cooler on my shoulder and back area.

Highlights

  • Natural latex fill regulates the air inside and keeps the temperature low
  • 100% cotton cover adds breathability and a smooth texture
  • Hypoallergenic and anti-mite

The Peacelily mattress topper might not be the first or second on this list, but since it’s the only latex topper on this list, it deserves to be regarded as a highly cooling one. The latex used in this topper is natural Dunlop, and it has breathable holes all through it. When I tested it, I could never feel that it gets hot during the night. It always kept cool. Comparatively, the Peace Lily slept cooler than the Emma Flip by 1.1 degrees. This is primarily due to latex’s natural ability to resist heat build-up. Latex is also naturally anti-dust mite and hypoallergenic, so it always feels fresh and cool. The cotton cover around this layer of latex is also 100% natural, so it adds lots of breathability and freshness.

This topper is also great for avoiding sinkage or pressure buildup on main pressure points. After reviewing it for a night, I felt relieved in my neck and shoulders. The Peace Lily was 0.05 inches softer than the Emma Flip on its soft side. That means the Peace Lily’s latex layer allows for slightly more sinkage and conforms enough without restricting the body, as latex is known for. Overall, the Peacelily mattress topper is the best latex option on this list and can compete with the foam toppers on the breathability feature.

Based on Our Review

After sleeping on the Peacelily mattress topper for a night I noticed how at no point during the night did I feel hot or wake up. I tested it on a memory foam mattress, so it sure slept a lot cooler.

Why You Should Trust Me

With years of knowledge and research in the mattress industry, we have the expertise to determine which mattress best fits you. Cool mattress toppers need to disperse heat nicely and provide a high comfort level. So, during our review, we paid extra attention to these aspects. You can see more ways how we test our toppers here.

What is a Cooling Mattress Topper and How Does it Work

A cooling mattress topper releases body heat and adds breathability using cooling materials like latex and memory foam. They work in several ways to keep the body cool:

  • Absorb and release body heat;
  • Regulate temperature so it never gets hot, preventing us from waking up (1);
  • Wick away moisture so the body doesn’t sweat on warm nights;
  • Add breathability through holes that constantly transfer air outside the topper.

During warm nights, I tend to sweat a lot, so I want a mattress topper that not only cools me down but also actively wicks moisture away.

How to Choose a Cooling Mattress Topper

There are several criteria to keep in mind while choosing a mattress topper in Australia that’s supposed to keep you cool, such as its material, suitability for different sleeping positions, firmness level, etc. Let’s go through some of those here so you can make better decisions.

Cooling Material

Cooling mattress toppers each have different materials. Some of them have latex inside, some gel-infused memory foam, and some other graphite-infused memory foam or other similar technologies. Each of these materials has a different level of cooling and lowers the temperature in a different way. For instance, latex adds breathability through the holes and pores inside its structure for the air to move around. Graphite-infused memory foam absorbs and releases lots of body heat, better than many other materials. Cooling gels in memory foams have a lower level of temperature regulation since they are not as good as graphite in releasing heat. The more pores a mattress topper has, the more breathable it is.

I especially like Graphite memory foam the most, because its cooling features are much stronger than the other materials.

Sleeping Position

Each sleeping position demands a different type of mattress topper. For example, stomach sleepers need a mattress topper that provides support for their hips and shoulders. A back sleeper needs a topper that provides support for their backbones and joints, and a side sleeper needs a topper that adapts to their body shape and relieves pressure.

Firmness Level

Depending on the material, the firmness level can be different. For example, latex mattress toppers can be firm or medium-firm, and memory foam toppers are usually found both in soft and firm levels. The firmness level can also determine whether you will sink in the mattress topper or feel less supported.

What are the Best Mattress Topper Types for Cooling

There are a few types of materials that make the best mattress toppers for cooling, including memory foam and latex. Here, I have listed them with their different subtypes.

Memory Foam

Even though memory foam is usually not considered a cooling or breathable material, it can get very cool if a cooling technology like graphite is added to it. Graphite retains less heat than most materials, so it can keep the body cool more efficiently.

Latex

Latex is a natural material that is often filled with pores and holes inside it. It’s bouncy and elastic and regulates air quite often. There are two types of latex: Talalay and Dunlop. Talalay is generally firmer and has fewer pores, while Dunlop is bouncier and has more pores inside it, leading to a cooler sleep experience.

Dunlop latex has worked better for me regarding cooling because it never seems to get hot. Whenever I touch it, it’s cool.

Gel

Gel-infused memory foam mattress toppers are also one of the top-rated cooling mattress toppers. It retains very little heat and wicks away the body’s moisture, so the body doesn’t feel sweaty during the night.

F.A.Q.

Is memory foam good for cooling?

Memory foam is generally not breathable or good for cooling, but gel-infused or graphite-infused memory foam mattress toppers have superior cooling features.

Do cooling mattress toppers really work?

Each cooling mattress topper has a different level of cooling depending on the material. Latex and other aerated memory foam can keep the mattress topper cool during the night. However, graphite-infused ones actively keep the body cooler.

Conclusion

Cooling memory foams are the best solution for having comfortable nights without experiencing sweat or frequently waking up. Among the best cooling mattress toppers in Australia that I’ve introduced in this article, I’d recommend the Emma Diamond Topper. It has the best cooling material, Graphite, which retains much less heat than others. Plus, it has a medium-firm feel, thus providing necessary support.

  1. What about durability? How long can I expect a cooling mattress topper to maintain its cooling properties?

    1. Durability can vary depending on the specific cooling mattress topper and its quality. In general, a well-made cooling topper should maintain its cooling properties for several years. However, it’s essential to check the manufacturer’s warranty and user reviews for insights on the topper’s longevity.

  2. Do cooling mattress toppers come in different sizes, or is there a one-size-fits-all approach? I need one for my queen-size bed.

    1. Cooling mattress toppers come in various sizes to match different bed dimensions. You’ll easily find options suitable for your queen-size bed.

  3. I’ve heard people talking about how the firmness of a cooling mattress topper can affect its cooling abilities. I’m interested in learning more about how firmness and staying cool are connected during sleep. Can you share some info on the relationship between them and give me some tips on what to look for when it comes to firmness?

    1. The firmness level can have a big impact on how effectively it keeps you cool. Typically, a medium to medium-firm topper is an excellent choice for maintaining that sweet spot of comfort and cooling. If it’s too soft, you might sink in and feel the heat; if it’s too firm, it can compromise your comfort. It’s all about balance, and when you’re shopping, be sure to check the product descriptions for terms like ‘medium’ or ‘medium-firm’ to get that cooling magic just right. Also, keep an eye out for toppers that have cooling technologies or gel-infused memory foam for that extra chill factor.

  4. I’ve been battling allergies, and they’re really getting on my nerves. I’m desperately in need of a hypoallergenic cooling topper, and it’s gotta be a game-changer! Any chance you could throw some suggestions my way for toppers available here in Australia?

    1. I completely understand the struggle with allergies, and it’s essential to find a hypoallergenic cooling topper that can make a significant difference. Based on your needs, I’d recommend looking into the Peacelily Mattress Topper.

      What sets the Peacelily Mattress Topper apart is its natural latex composition. Latex is inherently anti-dust mite and hypoallergenic, which means it keeps those pesky allergens at bay while providing a fresh and cool sleep experience. The top-notch breathability and freshness are further enhanced by the 100% natural cotton cover surrounding the latex layer.
